Description:

Seed and Legislation Expert Assistance to the Government of Armenia in finalizing an appropriate Seed Law and Plant Variety Protection (PVP) Law, and to develop an action plan for the improvement of the legal and regulatory framework governing the seed sector. Review and, where necessary, modification of methods and the institutional environment in the following specific objectives: Strengthening institutional and regulatory structures Raising operational standards of certification and quality control services to international standards Improving seed farms’ management practices and techniques Improving seed processing and marketing services Making available quality seed or rootstocks of other crops.
 

Russia

Manpower Training and Technical Assistance to the Russian Seed Industry, 1999 - ongoing

Technical assistance to the Seed Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Moscow. SW conducted two visits and training programmes for senior staff members from the Ministry, Russian Academy and Seed Industry. Seed Experts from SW followed up the training in Sweden by lecturing in a seminar in Moscow on "Government Seed Policy and Establishment of a Seed Market under New Economic Conditions”.

Iran

Technical Assistance to develop the Organisation and Management of the Production and Supply of OH Seed Rape in Iran, 1999- 2002

Seed experts from SW conducted a preparation study on behalf of the Oilseed Research and Development Company (ORDC) in Teheran. The whole seed chain i.e. crop research, variety testing, contract production, processing, quality control and marketing of oilseed rape was analysed. The proposed project is recommended to support the following:

  • Training of staff members of ORDC in "Seed Science and Technology in Oilseed rape" by SW in Sweden

  • Short term technical assistance in specialised fields of the Iranian Oilseed Rape Industry

China

Technical assistance to extend the northern boarder of winter wheat production in China, 1997 - 2002

The Institute of Crop Germplasm Resources, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing, assigned by the Chinese government to develop winter wheat production has requested assistance from SW to select suitable varieties for the special agro-ecological conditions in the central and northern part of China. Seed experts from SW have visited China and trained experts at the Institute of Crop Germplasm Resources in areas of germplasm selection, variety testing and seed technology. The programme has diversified into variety screening and modern technology in pulse and vegetable production.

TRAINING COURSE

Specialised Training Course in ”Organisation and Management of Seed Production and Supply”, 1994 – 2002.

The modern Swedish agriculture and its well developed seed industry provide a unique model to be studied in the international training programme on “Organisation and Management of Seed Production and Supply”. Svalöf Weibull AB has gained considerable experience in all areas related to seed at home and world wide, which will be used to define and categorize the equally and mutually dependent technical elements needed in a seed programme to work effectively.

The courses was designed for those holding senior positions in organisations involved in, for example, plant breeding, variety evaluation and release, seed production, processing, storage and marketing, seed education, seed quality control and certification with a common objective to improve the production and supply of high quality seed.

The overall training objective was to advance the participants’ managerial efficiency by increasing their knowledge in all the technical elements of a seed industry.

Specialised Training Course in ”Genetically Modified Crop Plants Practice – Biosafety and the route to market”, 2000 and 2003.

The course was undertaken under the East African Regional Programme and Research Network for Biotechnology, Bio safety and Biotechnology Policy Development (BIO-EARN)

The training objectives was to advance the participants’ managerial efficiency regarding genetic engineering, to broaden and develop the understanding of the interaction between conventional plant breeding and genetic engineering, advance the participants’ knowledge about the International Bio-safety Protocol, to present and put into practice the legislation in the European Union as an example of work with GMOs and to broaden and develop the participants’ knowledge about the different international systems for protection of intellectual properties such as patents, plant breeders’ rights etc.

Specialised Training Course in “Sustainable Agriculture in an Environmental Perspective” 1998 – 2004

The main objective of this course was to broaden the understanding of sustainable agriculture and the benefits of such a farming system.  In addition the objective was to enhance the knowledge of ecology, and agro ecosystems in order to increase the participants’ awareness of environmental problems, to provide knowledge of biodiversity and its importance to production and its impact on the environment, to demonstrate various plant breeding methods, including genetic modification, aiming at developing varieties well adapted to the environment and to provide tools for inclusion of sustainability aspects in agricultural planning.

The course was directed to managers or decision makers within the private or public agriculture sector in national, regional or local governments, NGOs, etc.

Specialised Training Course in “Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property Rights”  2003 – ongoing

The objective of the course is to assist participants to understand the background and the implications of the recent developments related to Intellectual Property Rights  (IPRs) and the exchange of genetic resources, to enable participants to find, use and draw conclusions from sources of information and expertise world-wide, related to IPRs and the exchange of genetic resources and to enhance participants’ managerial efficiency to handle, address and deal with genetic resources and intellectual property rights issues.

The course is directed to individuals at senior level from the government sector and from national R&D institutions in charge of managing and defining regulatory/policy IPR frameworks on genetic resources.
