Brief Description of Project:
To create a seed sector in Kyrgyzstan which works according to internationally accepted standards, enabling it to produce and market high quality seeds of improved varieties for Kyrgyz farmers, while re-activating exports. The specific objectives for sub-component A are to:
§ Strengthen institutional and regulatory structures and services relating to the seed industry, through a process of capacity enhancement, rationalization and restructuring.
§ Enhance output, quality, financial performance and competitiveness of seed farms/companies, by improving their production, processing, marketing and management practices.
§ Make available quality seed or rootstocks of priority crops by strengthening the market-driven seed supply chain.
§ Assist the public and emerging private plant breeding programs to implement a plant breeding program (developed together with SLU) with the aim of producing modern commercial varieties of the priority crops wheat, cotton and lucerne and esparcet.
§ Assist the MoA, institutes and other actors in formulating a strategy (developed together with SLU) for the future sustainable structure of plant breeding.
§ Assist and engage a new generation of plant breeders, in close contact with the SLU-TAU cooperation for higher education in plant breeding.

Brief Description of Project:
To create a seed sector in Kyrgyzstan which works according to internationally accepted standards, enabling it to produce high quality seeds of improved varieties for Kyrgyz farmers, while re-activating exports. The specific objectives for sub-component A are to:
§ Strengthen institutional and regulatory structures and services relating to the seed industry, through a process of capacity enhancement, rationalization and restructuring.
§ Raise the operational standards of certification and quality control services to international OECD, ISTA and ISF standards.
§ Improve seed farms’ management practices and techniques in order to improve output and quality as well as operational and financial performance.
§ Improve seed processing and marketing services so as to create a competitive situation in which farms have a choice.
§ Make available quality seed or rootstocks of other crops while improving production and marketing (refers to non-cereal crops).
The specific objective for sub-component B is to develop and implement a plant breeding program, with the aim of producing new commercial varieties in a few selected crops and attracting a new generation of plant breeders.
